Membership Drive Update #6


Happy New Year, Nourish supporters! Heading into 2017 we took some time to reflect on the past year and how far we’ve come. We recruited 100 new member-owners in 2016. We activated 62 volunteers. We held or attended just under 30 community outreach events. And we had 19 member-owners recruit new member-owners. It was a busy and productive year.

We also looked at what we need to prioritize in 2017. We thought about what we can do differently and improve upon in order to go from 100 member-owners in a year to 700 in six months.

This is an ambitious goal, but it is necessary and achievable. It is necessary in order to show the property’s developer, our landlord, that we will be able to secure the funding needed to build and operate a successful grocery store. It also ensures that we have the community backing to support our store once it opens. It is achievable if we can follow the strategy set forth by our Outreach Coordinator, Anneli. The plan involves shifting our focus to different activities, doubling down on some that have worked well and getting even more community members actively involved. Here are our priorities:

Priority #1: New Member Engagement
We as staff, board and volunteers will do a better job of welcoming new member-owners as they join, making sure they hear from us promptly and are welcomed warmly into our inclusive community. This will ensure that they feel a part of the co-op from the very beginning. It will also give us an opportunity to identify new volunteers and member-owner recruiters by making sure they know what opportunities exist and how they can help.

Priority #2: Volunteer Recruitment, Training and Management
Engaging over sixty volunteers to take action in one year is a HUGE accomplishment, and a credit to our member-owners and our supportive community. However in order to sign up an additional 700 member-owners, we need even more volunteer time. We also need some folks to take on more responsibility and help lead a portion of our outreach. (This is in addition to our dedicated and fabulous board, who are already engaged to the max.) We need volunteers to canvass important neighborhoods, contact and present to their neighborhood organizations, welcome new member-owners, table at events and host dinner parties and gatherings to get the friends and neighbors signed up. We also need folks with slightly more time and commitment to help lead these efforts.

Priority #3: Strategic, Focused Outreach
We will be making some changes to our outreach activities in 2017, which will ensure that we are contacting new people who might be interested in the co-op for different reasons. Here are the three new areas of focus: Anschutz Medical Campus, Registered Neighborhood Organizations and door-to-door outreach (canvassing).

In addition, we are excited to announce that we will be hiring a Marketing Intern to work with us this spring. We want to do an even better job of communicating with our member-owners and with the broader community, and this intern will help us to do that.
